'Modern Family's' Sarah Hyland - Kidney Transplant

Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland had a kidney transplant in April 2012.

Slightly puffy cheeks (like me) from her rejection meds.
The 21-year-old actress, who plays Haley Dunphy in the US TV show, told the new issue of America's Seventeen magazine that she underwent the operation after battling kidney dysplasia her whole life.
Hyland also revealed she got the kidney from her father, actor Edward James Hyland, ahead of the procedure on April 13th.

She said: 'You know that family is always going to be there for you – no matter what.
'My dad gave me a freakin’ kidney! But it's also the families that you create outside of your family.
'And you really find out what kind of people you're friends with.
'It was just amazing, and it really opened my eyes to see who's there for me and who's not.'
Hyland, who gave the interview while recovering from the surgery, added that she feels more than grateful to have got through the operation safely and healthily.

She said: 'I have a second chance at life – not a lot of people get that.'

The pretty young actress also revealed she wouldn't have been able to get through the difficult time without the support of her boyfriend Matt Prokop.

Sarah and her real life boyfriend, Matt
She said: 'He helps me with my medication and takes me to doctor appointments and all the stuff that I need to do to take care of myself.
'Any other 21-year-old guy would not be there, I guarantee it.
'I am one of the luckiest people in the world to have him be there for me.'

However, Hyland also revealed that she often struggled to cope with the pain she was in while filming scenes for Modern Family.

She said: 'But you know, if you’re sick, you still go to work.
'And in between takes, you sit down, or you lay your head down or something.'

Hyland is now hoping to help other young people cope with kidney disease and getting through transplants, and has teamed up with the Lopez Foundation to promote organ and kidney donation awareness.

Asked if she had any advice for people suffering from kidney diseases, Hyland replied: 'Know that you’re not alone.
'Even though it may seem like it a lot of the time.  And that if you ask, "Why me?" Well, why not you?  You know? It makes you the person that you are today.'

Have a look at this interview Sarah did, where she talks about transplant -

It's so inspiring to read about people who are going through something challenging but still manage to live a 'normal' life. Most people have no idea that Sarah Hyland had a kidney transplant and I think it's amazing that she didn't let her condition stop her from achieving her acting dream.

It's also a reminder that we shouldn't judge people. Sarah is a beautiful young, thin and successful actress which  means that people's jealously will cause them to find negative things to say about her. Or people may say 'she's so lucky, I wish I had her life'. But Sarah's story teaches us that everyone has problems, no one's life is perfect, even if it seems that way on the outside!
